NEW! Hospitals for Healthier Children Grant

Applications will be accepted until February 2, 2009

OHA's Foundation for Healthy Communities is now accepting applications from non-profit members of the Ohio Hospital Association. Grant funds awarded be used towards engaging local communities to reduce childhood obesity.

NEW! Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Implementation Funds Program

Applications will be accepted from November 1, 2008 - January 31, 2009

The CATCH Implementation Funds Program provides grants of up to $12,000 each year to pediatricians who want to initiate a pilot project that addresses the local health needs of children in the community. Grants are also available for pediatric residents, but limited to a maximum of $3,000.

Produce It!

Time Warner Cable is having a competition between high schools to make a 30 second TV PSA (Public Service Announcement) about healthy eating and being healthy.  The eligible schools for this competition are those that TWC provides cable service to (see attached list).  This is an excellent opportunity for OAFHK Zones within the TWC area to support these schools – namely Zones 2, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

NEW! Wal-Mart Foundation State Giving Program

Deadline: Friday, December 19, 2008
The Wal-Mart Foundation's State Giving Program awards grants at the state and regional level to programs that have a strong impact within the communities the company serves. Advisory Councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will determine how best to distribute State Giving Program funds. The program's priority funding categories include: Education, Job Skills Training, Health and Environmental Sustainability, including recycling programs, outdoor classrooms, etc. The minimum grant size for this program is $5,000.

Captain Planet Grant

Application Deadline: Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Schools and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for funding to involve children ages 6-18 in hands-on involvement projects to promote the understanding of environmental issues, including up to $500 for organic gardens. 

NEW! Tony Hawk Foundation

Application Deadline: March 2, 2009

The Tony Hawk Foundation's mission is to foster lasting improving in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth.  The grant program focuses on facilitating the design, development, construction and operation of new, quality skate parks located in low-income communities.  Priority is given to projects that are designed and built by qualified and experienced skateboard park contractors and include local skaters in the design process. 

2009 Nestle Very Best in Youth Program

Application Deadline: Thursday, November 20, 2008

The Nestle USA Very Best in Youth Program honors young people ages 13 to 18 who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place.  Eligibility: Youths ages 13- 18 years old who demonstrate good citizenship, a strong academic record, and can show how they have made a special contribution to their school, church or the community.  Entrants must have permission from a parent or legal guardian to submit the nominations.

NEW! Bikes Belong Grant Program

The Bikes Belong Coalition welcomes grant applications from organizations and agencies within the United States that are committed to putting more people on bicycles more often.

NEW! Promedica and WTVG-NBC Toledo: College Scholarship

Deadline: Monday, December 1, 2008

Promedica and WTVG-NBC Toledo have teamed up to sponsor the Lunch 101: Food for Thought Scholarship.  Each team must consist of 2 - 4 students in grades 10, 11 or 12, enrolled in a public, private, parochial, charter or home school within ProMedica Health System’s 27-county service area during the 2008 - 2009 school year.  All details are listed on the website linked above. 

NEW! Shade Structure Grants for Community Playgrounds

The American Academy of Dermatology offers a Shade Structure Grant program and is offering grants of $8,000 each to fund permanent outdoor shade structures designed to provide shade and ultraviolet ray protectionThe Shade Structure Program is open to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve children and teenagers, ages 18 and younger.

NEW! Magic Johnson Foundation Community-Based Grants (Cleveland, OH)

Programs recommended by the Magic Johnson Foundation for funding must be dedicated to serving the underrepresented, low-income and/or inner-city area in which they reside.  Programs must be located in one of the designated cities- Cleveland, OH being one.

Mall of America Foundation for Youth operates exclusively to provide support for and create opportunities that promote self-development, well-being and education for youth, their families and their communities.

 

Nike Physical Activity Grants for Youth

Nike Inc. supports programs that increase and promote physical activity and seeks to: 1) get youth more physical active; 2) get youth involved in the teamwork of sports; 3) have real, positive and measurable impact.  Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501 ( c ) (3) status in communities where Nike has significant employee or business presence. 

Albertsons Community Support Grants

Application Deadline: Rolling

Albertsons wishes to improve communities by giving back with donations in the areas of hunger relief, youth and education, health and nutrition, and environmental stewardship.  

NIKE Bowerman Track Renovation Program

Deadline for Applications-Ongoing through May 31, 2009

The Bowerman Track Renovation Program provides matching cash grants to community-based, youth-oriented organizations that seek to refurbish or construct running tracks. This 10 year, $2 million program, administered by Nike's Community Affairs department, provides matching funds of up to $50,000 to youth-oriented nonprofit organizations anywhere in the world.  Organizations applying for the grant must demonstrate a need for running track refurbishment or construction.

HealthierUS School Challenge (USDA)

The HealthierUS School Challenge is in response to the growing concern for childhood obesity in our nation.  The objective is to recognize schools that take specific steps to improve their programs and address obesity and to encourage other schools to follow their lead. The first year of the challenge focuses on elementary schools.  Go to the website for more information.

MetLife Foundation

MetLife Foundation was established for the purpose of supporting educational, health, civic and cultural organizations. Goals are to strengthen communities, promote good health and improve education. Health: To help people make more informed decisions about their health, grants are directed toward national health promotion and education initiatives, substance abuse prevention, youth health and fitness, healthy aging and research on Alzheimer's disease. Do Something & GameStop

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Do Something is a not-for-profit organization that works to inspire, support, and celebrate young social entrepreneurs and community activists. The organization is accepting applications for the following grant programs: Do Something and GameStop are offering grants of $500 each to young people, age 25 and younger, in the United States or Canada who have a great idea for a community-action project and need support to turn their idea into reality. GameStop grants are given out weekly. 

Hamburger Helper Grant
Application Deadline: Rolling
Hamburger Helper, a General Mills food brand, is looking to lend a "helping hand" to neighborhoods across the United States with its "My Hometown Helper" grant program. Individuals from communities and organizations across America can visit the program's web site to submit a written essay describing how the "My Hometown Helper" grant would help improve their community project.

Garth Brooks' Foundation

Application Deadline: Rolling

The Teammates for Kids Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit rganizations that specialize in working with children. The Foundation supports organizations that help needy children in the areas of health, education and inner-city services.  Grants range from $10,000-$50,000.


Rescuing Recess Campaign

Recently, Action for Healthy Kids, the National PTA, the Cartoon Network, and others have partnered to create a year-long campaign, Rescuing Recess.  The purpose of this campaign is to encourage elementary schools to maintain or restore a recess period for students.  Included in the campaign is an opportunity to receive a national grant of $25,000, as well as 51 smaller grants of $2,500.  Additionally, 51 schools will have the opportunity to eceive a $250 Sportime gift certificate. 

Schools registering with the Rescuing Recess Campaign will receive a Rescuing Recess Kit of playground equipment from the Cartoon Network and Sportime. 

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart Grant Program

The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) is accepting applications for its Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart grant program. The program enables organizations that have held a Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart event in the previous year to purchase equipment to improve heir physical education opportunities for children, receive the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Quality Physical Education Package, continue membership with AAHPERD, and attend the AAHPERD National Convention and Exposition.  Click on the links above to access more information and the application.

Aetna Foundation Regional Community Health Grants Program

Deadline for Applications:  Various

The Aetna Foundation, a philanthropic program of Hartford-based Aetna, is inviting proposals for its Regional Community Health Grants Program.  The program provides funding focused on reducing disparities in health care among racial and ethnic populations in eligible geographic areas.  In 2005, Aetna will devote up to $2.6 million to regional initiatives to address this issue.  Grant requests ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 that address diabetes initiatives targeting individuals and families with prevention and healthy behavior modification messages to help combat the growing incidence of type 2 diabetes in children and adults.

Athletics and Wellness Support Grants

Baseball Tomorrow Fund Offers Support for Youth Baseball and oftball Programs

The Baseball Tomorrow Fund is a joint initiative between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association designed to promote and enhance the growth of youth participation in baseball and softball.  Grants are intended to finance a new program, expand or improve anisting program, undertake a new collaborative effort, or obtain facilities or equipment necessary for youth baseball or softball programs.
